Flags commonly known as “Back the Blue” or “Thin Blue Line” flags that support police officers were put up this past Friday in Peru and taken down a day later.

Peru Mayor Ken Kolowski said he put the flags up around town for National Police Week, which runs May 9-15. He wanted to put them up as a surprise to officers and the public as a positive way to support police.

He was told on Saturday the flags may be a possible code violation, so he immediately took them down as he didn’t want to break rules.

He said he put the flags up with good intentions, and called it a “new mayor mistake.”

He’s not intending to put anything up at this time again, but said he will try again next year.
