A local former standout got his first collegiate home run Friday in Champaign. Hall High School's Cam McDonald is in his second year playing for the “Fighting Illini”. In the fourth inning Friday, McDonald's solo shot shrunk Northwestern's lead to 5 -3. The “Orange and Blue” plated eight runs in the 7th inning to win 12 – 8.
Unfortunately, Northwestern won the rest of the series. Starter Ty Rybarczyk, another Hall grad, gave up 5 runs in the first two innings Saturday before being replaced. Illinois lost a slugfest 16 – 14.
In Sunday's matchup, Northwestern won 12 – 5. In the fifth inning, McDonald played the ball off the right field wall and cut down the runner at second.
Illinois finds itself at 7-8 right now. They will host Nebraska for three Easter weekend.
