About Us

For over seventy years, WLPO has been serving listeners in the Illinois Valley and Starved Rock Country.  The station went on the air initially as a 250-watt non-directional daytime AM station and later increased to a 1000-watt directional daytime and 500-watt nighttime station.  Because our station’s power is directional, listeners in some communities may not be able to pick up the AM 1220 signal as well after dark and before sunrise.  To cover the Illinois Valley more completely, on 6/6/13, WLPO programming began being simulcast on FM103.9.  On 12/26/13, recognizing an opportunity to reach even more listeners throughout the day on a new FM frequency, WLPO relaunched as Classic Hits 103.9 WLPO.  Current programming retained many of the things long-time listeners enjoyed, like Rod in the Morning, news and weather around the clock and local sports, and added the greatest hits of all time throughout the day and night.

99.3 WAJK signed on as WLPO-FM in December 1964 as a 1000-watt monaural FM station.  In 1979 the call letters were changed to WAJK.  The station broadcasts in stereo and is a Class B1 FM signal.  WAJK plays Today's Best Music--favorite songs from the 90's, 2K and today--featuring artists like Maroon 5, Adele, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson and Pink.

WLWF (then WKOT) was added to the group in 1999 and is now 20-in-a-row country, 96.5 The Wolf!  You'll hear favorite songs from superstars like Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, Florida Georgia Line and Luke Bryan...all in long 20-in-a-row Wolf runs.

Our stations were owned by the Miller family (Peter, Pete and Cathy) from 1949 until 2019.  On January 1st, 2020, the stations were purchased by Starved Rock Media, Inc.  Starved Rock Media is a company formed by long-time employees Steve Vogler and John Spencer.  Steve began working at WLPO in high school and continued until his death October 1, 2019.  John began working at the stations in 1992.  John is the General Manager of the stations.  Mark Lippert is Vice-President of Sales & Marketing and Becky Stiles is Office Manager.

The stations take pride in serving listeners in the Illinois Valley and the greater Starved Rock Country.  Starved Rock Media, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
