Wednesday night, L-P High School parents and two students shared their feelings about masks, with the majority asking that masks be optional this school year.
The meeting follows CDC guidance recommending masks be worn indoors by those age 2 and older who are not fully vaccinated. The L-P board plans to make a final decision Aug. 3. The majority of board members Wednesday night said they think masks should be optional at school.
Some parents and students who advocated for optional masks said the masks are hazardous to physical and mental health and make learning difficult. Some said the masks aren’t effective at stopping the spread and said the district shouldn’t be choosing health options when it comes to students.
One mother did advocate for vaccines, and those of her family ages 12 and up are all vaccinated, — as well as the children’s 89-year-old great grandmother — and said, “If she can do it, we all can.”
